The National Medical Stores (NMS) is grappling with a massive Shs400 billion loss due to a surplus of COVID-19 vaccines that are no longer in demand and need to be discarded.

This process requires additional funding.

The Health Committee, under the leadership of Dr Francis Ayume, reported that by December 2023, 10 million COVID-19 vaccines had expired in NMS stores.

The demand for COVID-19 vaccines has decreased, leading to the expiration of stock in medical stores and the need for funds for incineration, according to Dr Agume.

He further stated that by December 2023, 10 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccines had expired due to low uptake.

He urged for funds to be allocated to the National Medical Stores for the retrieval and incineration of expired COVID-79 vaccines and related supplies.
