2nd Portion: Bereshit (Genesis 7:1-16)
Genesis 7:1-16:
1 And the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, for it is you that I have seen as a righteous man before Me in this generation.
2 Of all the clean animals you shall take for yourself seven pairs, a male and its mate, and of the animals that are not clean, two, a male and its mate.
Also of the fowl of the heavens, seven pairs, male and female, to keep seed alive on the face of the earth.
4 For in another seven days, I will make it rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will blot out all beings that I have made, off the face of the earth.”
5 And Noah did, according to all that the Lord had commanded him.
6 And Noah was six hundred years old, and the flood came about, water upon the earth. :
7 And Noah went in and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him into the ark because of the flood waters.
8 Of the clean beasts and of the beasts that are not clean, and of the fowl, and all that creeps upon the earth.
9 Two by two they came to Noah to the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after the seven days, that the flood waters were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on this day, all the springs of the great deep were split, and the windows of the heavens opened up.
12 And the rain was upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.
Commentary says:
And the rain was upon the earth:
And further (verse 17) Scripture says: “Now the Flood was [upon the earth].” But when He brought them [the rains] down,
He brought them down with mercy, so that if they would repent, they would be rains of blessing. When they did not repent, they became a flood. — [Midrash Hane’elam, Zohar Chadash 28a]
Genesis 7:13-16:
13 On this very day, Noah came, and Shem and Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, and Noah’s wife and his sons’ three wives with them, into the ark.
